A weekly lesson begins with a
read aloud of an interesting book.
The provided books are packaged with teacher-friendly post-it notes
containing all the questions and vocabulary highlights the teacher is to mention
throughout the read aloud

Students
then choose one to two words to further explore and use. Depending on the week, students might
draw a picture of their new word, look up their new word in a dictionary
(online or book format), act out the word, relate it to new words, or
identify synonyms and antonyms
Select
vocabulary words are taught and
recorded on the poster in the front of the room. Students then tally when words are found
in text or speech throughout the following week.

Students enjoyed tracking and
voting for their favorite words.
Weeks later, students would recall words we discussed
previously. Most importantly though,
was an interest in words and the ability to find meaning for unknown words in their independent
reading.
The Text Talk grant purchased teacher
materials and 2 copies of 20 titles.
It also included a teacher’s manual, post-it notes, a classroom
poster, and an instructional DVD.
The program is sustainable and will be fully operational for
years.
