Comparing 4 Towers

The book suggests students “grab” and then construct towers in order to compare. For this assessment give each student a bag of Unifix cubes in a preset amount using 4 colors. You should have more of one color, two colors that have the same amount, and one color that has less (e.g., 10 blue, 7 yellow, 7 green and 3 red). The color combinations should be different for each student if doing whole group.

1.  Give students a bag of pre-selected Unifix cubes. Instruct them to assemble cubes into towers and record on a “cube strip” sheet.

2. Ask each student to tell you want they have observed. Students should use terms more, less and the same.

3. 2^nd Semester ask students, ”How many more blue than yellow?”
