When your child is stuck on a word, here are some strategies that they can use to figure out the word:
o Did that make sense?
o You said _______. What does that mean?
o Have you heard a word like that before?
o What would make sense here?
o What is happening in the story? Does this word make sense in the story?
o Did that sound right?
o Can you say it that way?
o Would it be correct to say _________?
o Can you think of a better word that fits?
o What word would sound right?
o Did that look right?
o Do you know a word that looks like that?
o What do you notice about that word?
o Do you notice something familiar about that word?
o Do you see a part of the word you know?
o Were you right?
o Why did you stop?
o What did you notice?
o What else could you try?
o What else do you know that could help you?
