Plugged in age feeds a hunger for electricity |

Summary: |
Electricity use from power-hungry gadgets is rising fast all over the world. The fancy new flat-panel televisions everyone has been buying in recent years have turned out to be bigger power hogs than some refrigerators.
The proliferation of personal computers, iPods, cellphones, game consoles and all the rest amounts to the fastest-growing source of power demand in the world. Americans now have about 25 consumer electronic products in every household, compared with just three in 1980 |

Shapes that make structures strong |
|
Link: |

|
Summary: |
In this activity, students study the various shapes engineers choose to make structures strong -- in particular, triangles, arches, and domes. They begin by experiencing firsthand the forces of tension and compression. Then they construct a variety of forms, test their strength, and discuss how tension and compression are distributed by triangles, arches, and domes. The multimedia resources used throughout the lesson show many applications of these shapes used in ancient and modern cultures. Students also discuss examples of these shapes that they have seen in their own experiences. |

Summary: |
ThatQuiz is a free online resource for math practice and testing. It was written in the summer of 2004 and later expanded according to teacher needs and requests. The original goal was to provide easily accessible software for schools which were not fully utilizing the computers they had in their classrooms. The site has also become popular for students who want extra math practice at home. Although the first tests available were most suitable for elementary school students, new areas have been added for higher grades: algebra, angles, triangles, probability and geometry. |

Our Documents |
|
Link: |
|
Summary: |
We invite all Americans to participate in a series of events and programs to get us thinking, talking and teaching about the rights and responsibilities of citizens in our democracy. At the heart of this initiative are 100 milestone documents of American history. These documents reflect our diversity and our unity, our past and our future, and mostly our commitment as a nation to continue to strive to “form a more perfect union.”
We want everyone—students, teachers, parents, and the general public—to read these milestone documents, consider their meaning, discuss them, and decide which are the most significant and why. This initiative creates a number of ways to do that—through classroom activities and competitions, and votes. |

Panaramas.dk |

|
Summary: |
Panoramas.dk is created by Hans Nyberg a commercial photographer in Denmark
My intention with this site is to make immersive panoramic images also called VR Photography more known among the general public.
Interactive panoramas is a young media and as such it has for many years been known among entusiastic photographers and multimedia creators. An interactive VR panorama can not be seen in a book or on a printed image. If you print the panorama it gets a completely different expression.
Se examples here
You can only experience the feeling of being at the place and look around, on a computer. You can only distribute Vr Panoramas by the Internet or on CD.
With new fast internet connections Virtual Reality Panoramas has a large advantage in the tourist industri and in many other areas.
As a dokumentary of cultural heritage VR Photography is an excellent media which within a much smaller download than videos can give you a full view of a church or an ancient temple.
No other media can give you the feeling of being at the place like VR photos. And the ultimate feeling comes when you view it in Fullscreen |

Summary: |
For those unfamiliar with the term, a learning style is a way in which an individual approaches learning. Many people understand material much better when it is presented in one format, for example a lab experiment, than when it is presented in another, like an audio presentation. Determining how you best learn and using materials that cater to this style can be a great way to make school and the entire process of acquiring new information easier and much more intuitive. Here are some great tools that you can use to cater to your individual learning style, no matter what that is. |

How are plants affected by climate and the seasons? In this large experiment students across the Northern Hemisphere track the growth of the same plant as the season changes from winter to spring. They discover how temperatures, sunlight, geographic location, and other variables influence plant growth — and the full array of seasonal changes that take place in the springtime. These observations set the stage for a better understanding of the impact of a changing climate |

How Everyday Things Are Made |

|
Summary: |
This website was developed out of a brainstorming session between the Alliance for Innovative Manufacturing (AIM) at Stanford University, and design4X - a company that develops online courses on design and manufacturing topics. The goal was to introduce kids and adults to the amazing world of manufacturing. Our vision was to teach people about manufacturing, but to do it in a fun way. The best way for this to happen was to actually show things being made. Thus, we have collected over 4 hours of video detailing how things we use everyday are manufactured. This resource is free for all - the only thing we ask is that you let others know about it. Enjoy! |

Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to take home and share, and is archived for generations to come at the Library of Congress. Millions listen to our award-winning broadcasts on public radio and the Internet. 40 MPG |

|
Summary: |
"Welcome to 40mpg.org! We invite you to join us in working to make 40 miles per gallon the standard for all automobiles in the United States. The benefits are obvious: we reduce dependence on Middle Eastern oil, making us more secure; we lower the carbon emissions into the atmosphere that contribute to global warming; and we put America's technology community to work on these important problems, creating jobs, ensuring that the U.S. leads in the development and sale of new technologies.
Greater fuel efficiency just makes sense. It is technologically possible. The benefits are obvious. The obstacles can be overcome. Politicians need to know voters want it. Automakers need to hear from consumers directly. |

21 Critical Lessons |

Summary: |
"If someone doesn’t take us aside and teach us a few things (assuming we’d listen) before we graduate high school, we are doomed to learn life’s hardest lessons in the real world beyond the classroom.
With that in mind, here are 21 non-academic lessons every person should know before he or she graduates high school; if you graduated long ago (as I did), this list represents all the things you wish you had been taught, yet had to learn (or are still learning) on your own. " |

The Great Race |

|
Summary: |
The story of Tortisha and Harry is presented to the class: Harry is so sure that he can run faster than Tortisha, that he will give her a 2 mile head start in a race. Harry runs at the rate of 3/4 mile in 6 minutes and Tortisha runs at the rate of 1/2 mile in 5 minutes. Will Harry ever catch Tortisha? Students first map the progress of Tortisha and Harry using the Dream Track worksheet. Finding this to be quite tedious and confusing, they make a chart to examine patterns and then graph Harry’s and Tortisha’s progress. Finally, students analyze the problem to arrive at algebraic representations for both Harry’s and Tortisha’s rates. This information is entered into the graphing calculator which generates both a chart and graph of the situation. So, the question still remains, “ Who will win the race?” Students discover that either Tortisha or Harry could win the race, or it could be a draw. It all depends on the length of the race. |

Applet: Seasons |
|
Link: |
|
Summary: |
"Many people believe that the seasons are caused by the Earth changing its distance to the Sun during its annual elliptical orbit. This is wrong. In fact, the Earth is closest to the Sun in January, when it is coldest in the northern hemisphere.
Instead, the seasons are caused by the Earth's axis of rotation not standing perpendicular to its plane of rotation around the Sun, but at an angle of 23°
In this applet we created a tool to visualize the origin of the seasonal variation of the temperature. We select the reference frame of the Earth to do this and show where in the sky the Sun is as a consequence of the revolution of the Earth around it." |

Education World: Technology Integration Made Easy |
|

|
Summary: |
Integrating technology into the curriculum is a priority -- if not a mandate -- in most schools today. Most educational technology experts agree, however, that technology should be integrated, not as a separate subject or as a once-in-a-while project, but as a tool to promote and extend student learning on a daily basis. The challenge, of course, is in finding ways to use technology -- and to help students use it -- that don’t take time away from core subjects. Education World offers the following 19 easy ways in which you can seamlessly integrate technology into your daily and weekly classroom routines |

This Web site was designed and developed to support the teaching of American History in K-12 schools and colleges and is supported by the Department of History and the College of Education at the University of Houston. Our website offers a variety of ways for students and teachers to actually do history. The authors have created 72 inquiry-based interactive modules that we call eXplorations. These modules provide extensive primary sources on such topics as Mexican, Tejano, and Texian perspectives on the battle of the Alamo; Franklin D. Roosevelt's decision to relocate Japanese Americans during World War II and the Lyndon B. Johnson's decision to escalate American involvement in the Vietnam War in 1964 and 1965; and children's perspectives on slavery, westward migration, and World War II. |

Increasing Student Engagement and Motivation |
|
Link: |
|
Summary: |
High motivation and engagement in learning have consistently been linked to reduced dropout rates and increased levels of student success (Blank, 1997; Dev, 1997; Kushman, 2000; Woods, 1995). Yet, keeping students interested in school and motivating them to succeed are challenges that present themselves year after year to even the most seasoned teachers. In fact, numerous studies have shown that student engagement in school drops considerably as students get older (Anderman & Midgley, 1998). By the time students reach middle school, lack of interest in schoolwork becomes increasingly apparent in more and more students, and by high school, as dropout rates attest, too many students are not sufficiently motivated to succeed in school (Lumsden, 1994). |

Summary: |
The material on this site is organized according to the biological principles of Taxonomy, or classification. All living beings are currently divided into five Kingdoms. Four of these Kingdoms are depicted above: Plantae, the plant kingdom, studied in the field of Botany; Fungi, the kingdom of fungus and molds, studied as Mycology; Animalia, the animal kingdom, the domain of Zoology; and Protoctista, a catch-all for all other "higher-order" organisms from single-celled microbes to large seaweeds (algae). The fifth kingdom, Monera, consists of bacteria -- small-celled microorganisms without true cell nuclei. |
