Analyze the purposes, structure, and concepts of the U.S. Constitution.

1. The Articles of Confederation, our first Constitution, did not have a strong enough

central government to address economic and governmental problems.

2. A positive legacy of the Articles of Confederation was the adoption of the Northwest Ordinances, which established procedures for the orderly expansion of the United States.
3. The writing of the new U.S. Constitution required many compromises, such as the Great Compromise and the Three-Fifths Compromise.

What to do:

1. Read Chapter 8, sections 1& 2.

2. Answer the following questions: a) What were the strengths and weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation?

b) What were the purposes and details of the Northwest (1787) and Land (1785) Ordinances ?

c) Fully explain the Great Compromise and the 3/5 Compromise , which helped get our current Constitution adopted.

How to do: Writing, poetry, poster, mailed or “on disk” powerpoints, whatever way to show you know the answers. You can do combinations of writing, art, song, etc. as well.
