LESSON
2
DETERMINING
DENSITY
Density is defined as the mass per unit volume of
a substance.
-
Calculations are done by measuring the mass
of an object and comparing this with its volume.
-
Gram is the unit of measure for mass
-
Cubic centimeter or milliliter is the unit
of measure for volume
-
Density of a substance is grams per cubic
centimeter (g/cm3)
-
Density of water is 1.0g/cm3
Density is a characteristic property of matter.
A characteristic property is a property that is
independent of mass, volume, and shape.
Characteristics properties refers to substances.
The volume of a liquid will be measured using a
graduated cylinder.

Irregular objects will be measure by displacement.

Measuring units of mass is done with electronic
balances.
Mass per unit volume, or density, is the
determining factor in floating and sinking.
Mass is a measure of quantity of matter in an
object, and volume is a measure of the space it occupies.
Mass is not affected by shape.
Weight is a measure of force of gravity acting on
an object and is measured in newtons.
Mass is a measure of the inertia of an object.
