Lesson 5 through tides

Study Guide (key)

1.     Except when there is a lunar eclipse, only half of this celestial body is illuminated.

Half toward the Sun

2.     Which side of the Moon is always illuminated?

The side facing the Sun

3.     What happens to the side of the Moon that is facing the Sun?

The side of the Moon that faces the Sun is always changing

4.     Moon orbiting the Sun earlier, later or at the same Is the time that the Earth is orbiting the Sun?

Same time

5.     Does the Moon change visibly from the Earth?

Yes

6.     When the Moon looks as large as the Sun that is called _______________ size.

Apparent

7.     As the Moon orbits the Earth, the Moon goes through eight ___________.

Phases

8.     List and draw the eight phases of the Moon.

See student notes and labs

9.     The part of the Moon that is in its own shadow is called the ______________.

Dark side

10.                        When the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, only the dark side is visible, known as _________________.

 A new moon

11.                        When the Earth is between the Moon and the Sun and the Moon’s entire side is visible, this known as __________.

A full moon

12. The time it takes the Moon to orbit Earth one complete revolution is called __________.

Sidereal month

13. The time from one new moon to the next new moon or 29.5 days is called ___________.

Synodic month

14.    During a synodic month the following two things have occurred:

1.     Earth orbited about 1/12th of the way around the Sun.

2.     Moon completed one cycle of lunar phases

15.    How long does each Moon phase last?

A little over half a week (3.5 – 4 days)

16.    As seen from Earth, what causes the Moon to change its apparent shape throughout the month?

Depending on the relative positions of the Moon and Earth, only certain portions of the Moon’s illuminated side is visible from Earth.

17.    Is the Moon visible only in the nighttime sky? Why or why not?

No, the Moon is also visible in the daytime sky, depending on it position as it orbits Earth.

18.Define waxing and waning in reference to the Moon.

Waxing: the illuminated portion of the Moon is continuing to grow. Waning: the illuminated portion of the Moon is continuing to shrink.

19.What is a light year?

The distance light travels in  a year.

20.Why doesn’t the star Polaris seem to move?

Polaris is located at the top of the world and Earth is at a 23 1.2 degree tilt orbiting around the Sun. All stars are orbiting around the pivotal point of Polaris located at the top of Earth’s northern pole.

21.                        Why are observatories located in remote locations?

There is less light from the cities and towns to distract the light coming from the stars.

22.                        Correct this works cited address:

ESPN Internet Ventures ESPN November 12, 1999 and http://espn.go.com and November 16, 2005

ESPN. 12 Nov. 1999.  ESPN Internet Ventures. 12, Nov. 2005 http: espen.go.com.

23.                        How often do solar and lunar eclipses occur?

About two to three times a year.

24.                        _________________________ is blocking of Moon that takes place when Earth comes directly between Sun and the full moon.

Lunar eclipse

25.                        _________________________is the outer part of a shadow.

Penumbra

26.                        _________________________ is blocking of Un that occurs when a new moon comes directly between Sun and Earth.

Solar eclipse

27.                        _________________________ is when Moon is furthest in its orbit around Earth.

Annular

28.                        _________________________ is the inner part of the shadow.

Umbra

29.                        _________________________ is when Sun, Earth and Moon are ‘in a straight line’.

Syzygy

30.                        _________________________ is when Moon does not completely cover Sun during an eclipse.

Partial solar eclipse

31.                        _________________________ is when Moon is completely in Earth’s umbra.

Totality

32.                        _______________________ are the location where Earth’s orbital plain crosses Moon’s orbital plain.

Nodes

33.                        Why don’t solar and lunar eclipses occur every month?

This is because Moon’s orbit tilted, and the new moon and full moon are not always in line with Sun and Earth.

34.                        Is there a pattern between the number of days of a solar and lunar eclipse?

Solar and lunar eclipses seem to occur in ‘pairs’, with a lunar eclipse often occurring within 2-3 weeks after a solar eclipse. These pairs occur within the same synodic month and seem to occur about 6 months apart.

35.                         What would have to happen for a lunar and solar eclipse to occur every month?

Moon’s orbit would have to be in the same plane as Earth’s orbit.

36.                        __________________________ are the of the ocean caused by Moon’s gravitational pull on Earth.

Tides

37.                        __________________________ is lower than usual high tide that occurs during the first and last quarter phases of the moon.

Neap tide

38.                        What does the pull of Moon do to the ocean?

During high tides Moon’s pull causes a bulge on Earth facing the moon and facing opposite the moon.

39.                        Draw the following and label:

a.     solar eclipse

b.     lunar eclipse

c.      phases of the Moon

d.     Moon’s gravity pull during low and high tides

e.      Apogee

f.       paragee
