LABS
Conduct the following labs. Answer the
questions at the end of this exercise.
1.1 Describing Matter:
a.
Take two
teaspoons of flour and place it on a saucer. Using your magnifying glass (if
available) write what you see thinking about color and texture. Sketch your observation.
b.
Place three drops
of water on the flour. Using your magnifying glass (if available) write what
you see now. Sketch your observation.
c.
Take two
teaspoons of salt and place it on a saucer. Using your magnifying glass (if
available) write what you see thinking about color and texture. Sketch your observation.
d.
Place three drops
of water on the salt. Using your magnifying glass (if available) write what you
see now. Sketch your observation
e.
Do you think the
flour and sugar are pure substances? Why or why not?
1.2 Adding Water:
a. Place ¼ cup of water into a measuring cup.
b. Place a small object (suggestion – marble) into the water in the measuring cup.
c. Mark the increase in water height.
d. Repeat steps b and c with another object of similar size.
e. Record the increase in water height.
f. How could you find out whether the two objects contain the same amount of matter? Explain.
1.3 Burning Candle:
g. Light a tea candle.
h. Place it under a glass.
i. Observe what happens.
j. Why do you think the candle reacted the way it did?
1.4 Mixing Liquids:
a. Place 2 tablespoons of water in a small clear container with a lid.
b. Place 2 tablespoons of oil in the same container.
c. Shake.
d. Observe what happens after a few minutes.
e. What happened and why?
1.5 Floating and sinking:
a. Place a sponge in a sink filled slightly with water. The sponge floats. Why?
