Vocabulary:
1.
Sequence- an ordered list of numbers or objects
called terms in a certain order
ex.1,2,3,4 or ex. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
2. term(in a sequence)- an element or number in a sequence
ex.{1, 2, 3, 4}1,2,3,4 are each terms ex.{a, b}a and b are
terms
Often times you will
be asked to name the next term, or the next three terms in a
sequence.
One type of sequence is an arithmetic(air-ith-metic) sequence
3. arithmetic sequence- an ordered list of numbers in which the
difference between consecutive terms is always the same
ex.2, 4, 6,______,______,______ The next3 terms are 8, 10, 12 because these are
consecutive even integers. The difference between each term is 2.
ex.2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 ex.8, 13, 18, 23, 28
4. consecutive- following one right after the other in
order
ex.{Jan, Feb, March} ex.{1, 3, 5, 7}consecutive odd numbers
5. Common difference-the difference between any two successive
terms in an arithmetic sequence
* You cannot tell if a sequence is arithmetic
by looking at a finite number of terms, because the next term might not fit the
pattern.
ex. {1, 2, 4, 8, 16...} This sequence is not arithmetic.*
