Amendments 11 – 27

 

11.  Passed 1798:  States can’t file a law suit against another state.

  Individuals can’t file a suit against a state that they do not live in.

12. Passed 1804:  Electing a President

                Used to be:  Top elector vote gets President and 2nd place gets Vice President Position

                Now:  two or more parties – the president and vice president are on the same ticket (they run together)

13.  Passed 1865:  *Abolished Slavery *

14.  Passed 1868:  Defined national and state citizenship, protected rights and equal protection for slaves. Gives citizenship to slaves.*

15.  Passed 1870: The right to vote ( all men).*

16.  Passed 1913:  Income Tax – congress can collect taxes on income

17.  Passed 1913:  Direct Election of Senators*

18.  Passed 1919:  Cannot sell, make, or ship of alcohol

19.  Passed 1920:  Women suffrage (women can vote)*

20. Passed 1933:  Vice President and Presidential terms end on Jan 20th at 12:00 noon (known as the Lame Duck                  Amendment).  Congress takes office on Jan 3rd

21.  Passed 1933:  Repealed the 18th amendment  (make alcohol legal again)

22.  Passed 1951:  Presidential term limits – 2 ½ terms, 10 yr max.  (FDR amendment)

23.  Passed 1961:  Washington D.C. residents can vote for president*

24.  Passed 1964:  Abolished voting poll taxes*

25.  Passed 1967:  If the President can’t do the job, the Vice President takes over until he dies or returns

26.  Passed 1971:  Suffrage to 18 and over (can vote if you are 18)*

27.  Passed 1992:  A sitting congress cannot vote itself a pay raise
