The War of 1812

 

A.      The War Begins

1.       War on Britain was declared in June of 1812

2.       Britain did not want to go to war because they were already at war with France

 

B.      First Phase of the War:

1.        Our navy prepares for war with fast warships, experienced officers, and early victories

2.       Oliver Perry led an American fleet with the ship the Lawrence in a battle on Lake Erie

3.       The British eventually surrendered in the Battle of Thames. 

4.       Tecumseh died which put an end to the united Indian tribes.

 

C.      Second Phase of War

1.       Britain attacks Fort McHenry in Baltimore, burned the capital building and the white house

2.       America defeats British in the Battle of Lake Champlain in 1814.

3.       In the south, Andrew Jackson’s army fights British in New Orleans, and wins.

4.       The war ended in 1814 with the Treaty of Ghent.

 

D.      Legacy of the War (outcomes of the war)

1.       American Patriotism increased

2.       Native Americans’ strength was weakened once Tecumseh died

3.       U.S. manufacturing increased because they had to make their own goods when trade was interrupted

4.       Proved we could defend ourselves against powerful military powers.
