1.   Why did England take the fighting down into the Deep South?

·         The South is close to the West Indies, and supplies would be closer

·          there are many loyalists in the south and England was hoping they would help

·          they  hoped slaves would join

 

2.   What was England’s biggest victory in the south? Why was it important?

Charleston, South Carolina – it was a huge harbor and the cultural center of the south

 

3.   Why was Francis Marion successful in fighting down there?

He used guerrilla warfare – camouflage, make roads, hit and run, surprise attacks  

 

4.   What was Greene’s strategy in the Carolinas?

Tire out the British. 

 

5.   What was Cornwallis’ biggest mistake? Why?

He set up a fort on a Peninsula which limited his escape options.  He hoped for British Navy help from New York

 

6.   Why couldn’t Cornwallis escape Washington’s army at York town?

A French navy fleet arrived and blocked Cornwallis from getting supplies,  and 17,000 American and French troops

Blocked a land escape – so Cornwallis was trapped.  (Washington surrounded him – forcing him to surrender)
