9-2 Issues Washington has to deal with:

 

1.      The Indian Problem

a.        Americans want the land in the Northwest Territory, but the Indians don’t want to give it up.

b.      Washington decides to go to battle with the Indians over the land.

c.       The Indians are eventually defeated at the Battle of Fallen Timbers.  The Indians tried to seek the help of the British, but the British offer no help.

2.      The Whiskey Rebellion

a.       Farmers in the Pennsylvania area were making whiskey out of rye and use it for trade

b.      The government decides to tax the whiskey.

c.       Farmers rebel

d.      Washington sends his army to enforce the law and does not tolerate the rebellion

3.      European Alliances

a.       There was a revolution in France and Americans need to decide if they should take sides (French or English)

b.      Reasons to side with France:  they helped us in a war, we already signed a treaty with them, they are in the revolution to gain independence like we did

c.       Reasons to side with England:  They are America’s biggest trading partners

d.      Washington decides to side with France because of loyalty of the treaty signed with that country
