Classroom Policies

Welcome back toWestlake High School! It is exciting to start a fresh, new year with all of you.  Following are some policies and expectations you should familiarize yourself with in order to succeed.  You are going to have a very successful year if you have the desire to learn!

A.      Classroom Requirements:  Things you will need in order to be successful in this class.

·         Elements of Literature textbook

·         Novel for free reading

·         Loose-leaf paper (no spirals please!)

·         Binder with paper (exclusive to this class)

·         Writing Utensils

·         Day Planner/Agenda/Goals( you must have this in order to use the restroom, go to your locker, etc.—no exceptions!)

  1. Curriculum

·         Study questions and worksheets

·         Assignments—handouts, readings, vocabulary, etc.

·         One major paper per quarter

·         Oral presentations/Group presentations

·         Miscellaneous writing

·         Quizzes and tests

·         Class participation

·         Journals

·         Daily Grammar Practice

·         Vocabulary building –You should have a Vocabulary workbook from last year.  Please find it!  The cost of replacement is $10.  See me if you cannot find yours (or if you are new to the school!)

C.  Grading

·         Grading is based on the total number of points you receive in this class

·         Grading scale is listed in the student handbook

·         All late assignments will receive a maximum of 59% when turned in late.  Each grading period (4 ½ weeks, 9 weeks, etc.) is the cutoff for all major assignments, and then the grade will be worth 0 points.  For example, if you turn in a paper after the grading period, but it was due before, then you will receive no credit for that paper.

·         All assignments are due on the date expected.  This includes coming in late to school after my class and days that you leave for a field trip.  Please put assignments in my mailbox in this case. No exceptions!

D.  Absence Policy

·         Please request work ahead of time; get work immediately after an excused absence.  It is your responsibility to get your make-up work.  Please see me at a convenient time for this, after you have looked at your monthly calendar/assignment board, etc.

·         When absent, try to make up work before coming back.  This will be convenient, as you will have access to a monthly calendar through wlake.org.

·         Work cannot be made up for unexcused absences

·         Three tardies = one detention (coming to class unprepared counts as a tardy)
