English 9 Honors

 

 

Welcome to Westlake High School!  It is exciting to start a fresh new year with all of you.  Following are some policies and expectations you should familiarize yourself with in order to succeed in this class.  You are going to have a very successful year if you have the desire to learn!

 

If you want to see what your grade is at any given time during the year, Progress Book allows you to see your grades and is updated weekly.  This can be found on the district’s homepage.

 

A.      Classroom Requirements:  Things you will need in order to be successful in this class.

 

·         Elements of Literature textbook (third course)

·         Novel for free reading

·         Loose-leaf paper (no spirals please!)

·         3 ring binder with paper and tabs (exclusive to this class)

·         Writing Utensils

·         Day Planner/Agenda/Goals

 

 

  1. Curriculum

·         Study questions and worksheets

·         Assignments—handouts, readings, vocabulary, etc.

·         Research paper, Compare/Contrast essay, Persuasive essay, Narrative essay, Literary Analysis

·         Oral presentations/Group presentations

·         Miscellaneous writing

·         Quizzes and tests

·         Class participation

·         Journals

·         Daily Grammar Practice (DGP)

·         Vocabulary work book.  You will purchase this in the main office.  The cost is $10—Check made payable to Westlake Board of Education.

 

 

  1. Grading

·         Grading is based on the total number of points you receive in this class

·         Grading scale is listed in the student handbook

·         No extra credit

·         I accept no late assignments.  All assignments are due on the date expected.  All late assignments will be recorded as a zero.  This includes coming in late to school after my class and days that you leave for a field trip.  Please put assignments in my mailbox in this case. No exceptions!

 

  1. Absence Policy

·         Please request work ahead of time; get work immediately after an excused absence.  It is your responsibility to get your make-up work.  Please see me at a convenient time for this, after you have looked at your monthly calendar/assignment board, etc.

·         When absent, try to make up work before coming back.  This will be convenient, as you will have access to a monthly calendar through wlake.org.

·         Work cannot be made up for unexcused absences

·         Three tardies = one detention (coming to class unprepared counts as a tardy)

 

 

  1. Rules

 

* Wait to be noticed before you speak.

 

*Keep hands, feet, and negative comments to yourself.

 

*Bring all necessary materials to class.

 

*Follow directions the first time they are given.

 

 

1.        First offense—Warning, depending on severity of offense

2.       Second offense—Teacher detention and possible removal from class

3.       Third offense—Removal to office.

 

Teacher Detention:  To be worked out with me.  Detentions must be served within two school days before or after school as specified on your detention slip.
