Hilliard Art Community

†††††††††††††††† At Hilliard we believe art is an important way for students to explore ideas and concepts. Through art they can increase their understanding of the complex world we live in.† In class, students learn about fine artists, cultural arts, and commercial arts. Students are encouraged to combine what we are learning in class with their previous experiences to build personal knowledge. This is done by experimenting and exploring with art materials and processes. It is my goal to help students consider the way images are an important part of their everyday lives as well as an important part of our social, intellectual, and cultural progress as human beings.

†††††††††††††††† I like to ask questions that challenge the students to examine what they know and believe. These types of questions help them form their own opinions based on critical thinking. Some of these questions are;

†††††††††††††††† What is art? If you apply your definition does it exclude or include things

†††††††††††††††† in ways you didnít intend?

†††††††††††††††† Why do we like the things we like?

†††††††††††††††† Can art be used to change our thinking? Is that a good thing?

†††††††††††††††† How are the values of the architect who built your

†††††††††††††††† home affecting your life?

†††††††††††††††† These types of questions are included throughout the art curriculum to get students at all grades levels using higher order thinking skills to solve problems presented to them. The curriculum is also built around the state standards and my desire to provide a wide ranging perspective of what art might be. Please feel free to follow the link below and look at the art standards for the state of Ohio.
