Introduction

Earthquakes and volcanoes are awesome forces of nature.  What causes them?  How have they changed the earth’s surface around them?  What are some of the more famous earthquakes and volcanoes?  You are going to be investigating and reporting on a famous earthquake, region where earthquakes occur, or volcano.

Task

After receiving your topic, you will be looking up information about that earthquake or volcano.

You will use that information to do the following activities:

 1.  Present a 3-5 minute speech on your topic.

     2.   Create a visual to accompany your speech.

Activity #1 (Speech)

1.      For activity #1, use the Internet links and books

listed below to locate information about your topic.

2.      You may NOT copy and paste the information.

You  must put the information in your own words.

Included in your speech must be the following:

*                     The date(s) that your earthquake(s) or volcano

occurred.

*                     Where your earthquake/volcano occurred

(be able to point it out on a world map for us).

*                       Is the area known for seismic/volcanic activity?

Be able to explain why (think plate boundaries)

*                       Is your volcano dormant, extinct, or active? (pg. 98)

*                       Is your volcano a shield, cinder cone,

 or composite volcano? (pgs. 104-105)

*                How much damage did your earthquake or

 volcano cause? (destruction of area,

 economically, etc.)

*                How many people were affected?

( injured,  fatalities, left homeless, etc.)

*                       Are there any other interesting facts that you found?    Include any human interest stories if possible. (You should have a lot of extra facts)

3.   For most topics, you must have at least ONE Internet

source, and ONE print source (book, magazine,

newspaper article—you may count online newspapers or

     magazines as a print source)

Activity #2  Visual

     1.  Create a visual that shows an interesting or important aspect of your volcano or earthquake.

bd10264_  Poster (You can include photos, a map showing the location of your topic and the fault line for an earthquake or location on the ring of fire for a volcano; you can use diagrams to explain how an earthquake occurs and what type of volcano you have- be creative & imaginative)

bd10264_  Chart or graph

bd10264_  Photo collage
