Sea Team Trip to Canton Football Hall of Fame
Students on the SEA Team, many of whom used their math
skills in Fantasy Football, were challenged to create a
small traveling exhibit for the Canton Pro Football Hall
of Fame, which is just far enough away from our school
to make a field trip there logistically difficult.

Football Math / Language Arts Project
Students were asked to create 3-D markers to exhibit
information, including player/coach stats, about an enshrinee for a
middle school student audience. The project covered math and language arts
objectives, as students had to create their own 3-D marker by using a
restricted supply list – STEM! Once all of the markers were completed,
these prototypes went on display and SEA Team students voted for the best 4
in the collection. The top 20 designs are featured in the school showcase.

Live Broadcast from the Cleveland Great
Lakes Science Center
A small
number of students traveled to the Great Lakes Science
Center and armed with a laptop, a digital camera, and
wireless internet connection, they conducted a 30 minute
interview / presentation about the GLSC's wind
generator. In coordination with other activities
part of a Wind Generator unit, these students connected
with classrooms back at school via video conferencing
software.

The students
went through the important problem solving steps and
learned about experimenting. They came up with a
problem, hypothesis, control, and variable. They then
performed their experiments recorded their data and came
up with a conclusion. Students used the

Marshmallow Towers
The marshmallow Tower building activity was something I
did on the first day of school to get the students to
collaboratively work together and construct the tallest
, free-standing tower they could build within a short t
period of time. The students found it challenging and
fun to work together to devise a plan that they could
all agree upon within their group of 4-5 students. As a
teacher, I found it insightful to see what students were
willing to take a leadership role and how well the class
can work with together. The constraints were materials
and time.

Math Attack!
To review
concepts and promote math, students are sometimes
'surprised' in class and asked to describe a math
problem as the video tape rolls (using digital cameras
obtained through the grant. The video is put on
the morning announcements once a week.

Kahler's Pumpkin Drop
The Pumpkin
drop activity is a multi disciplinary activity that
involves the entire team of students and teachers. In
history class the students chose to research an
historical person from the 18th century. In
Language arts class the students gave a speech on their
Historical Figure and in Math and Science classes, the
students drop their historical pumpkins and calculated
the speed and acceleration due to gravity from 1m,3m,5,
& 7 meters high.

7th grade /
8th grade
In an effort to make the STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Math) learning more real world the 7th
and 8th graders at Lee Burneson Middle School
attended demonstrations presented by members of the
business community. Through these interactive
experiences, students discovered why math, science, and
technology are so important to everyday life, and
encourage them to choose one of these as a field of
study when they continue their education.
These days are meant to illustrate how the STEM lessons
students are learning in class today relate to careers
in their futures. The ultimate goal is to generate a
talent base to establish Ohio as a magnet and global
leader in attracting, educating and producing the next
generation of scientists, engineers, and other
professionals.

White Team Bridge Unit and Video Conference
21st century
learning at it’s best! Students on the White Team
participated in a Bridge S.T.E.M. project. The project
started with a community connection, in which a bridge
engineer came in to share his expertise, a web
conference with an advertising agency, and then a field
trip on the Good Time III to see the bridges in
Cleveland. After that, students worked in teams
consisting of Project Directors, Accountants,
Architects, and Carpenters to develop their companies
and bridges. This interdisciplinary project ended with
a presentation of the bridges and a weight baring test
to see if the students’ bridges would be falling down or
not!
