High school track and field notes: New county meet could be off and running

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Adam Kalivoda, Amherst

YEAR: Junior
LAST WEEK: He was a member of the winning pole vault relay (36-6) at last Saturday’s Comet Relays. Individually, he vaulted a personal-record
14-0. He also won the pole vault on April 23 against visiting Brecksville with a jump of 13-9.
OTHER SPORT: Golf
BIO: Kalivoda was a 2007 Division I regional qualifier and finished second at the Southwestern Conference meet. Last fall, he helped the varsity golf team finish fifth at the Sandusky sectional and Thunderbird Hills, one spot away from a district team berth. Kalivoda is also a member of student council and concert choir. He has a 3.7 grade-point average.

Kalpana Beach, Westlake

YEAR: Freshman
LAST WEEK: She high-jumped a school-record, 5 feet, 8 inches at the Lakewood Kiwanis Relays.
OTHER SPORTS: Volleyball, basketball
BIO: Last year, Beach jumped a middle-school conference record 5-4 at Smokey Hill, a suburb of Denver. She was first-team
All-Southwestern Conference in basketball this winter, averaging 16 points and six rebounds per game. Beach set a school record in the fall as a member of the varsity volleyball team, blocking 20 attempts in one match. She also plays AAU basketball for SMAC. Her dad was an NFL wide receiver for four years, playing for the Jets, 49ers and Packers. He caught Brett Favre’s first NFL pass completion. Beach is the oldest of four children. She has a 3.5 GPA.
