Description of Assignment

Problem solution essays are researched proposals that call for definite action. For this assignment, you will write a 10—15 page problem solution essay in which you will decide upon a significant problem within your potential field of study, carefully analyze the problem, and propose three possible solutions to this problem. This is 40% of your cumulative grade.

 

Requirements

Your problem solution essay will be comprised of seven parts in length and typed in MLA format. Each part will be very specific (as assigned) and must be well – researched. Included will be parenthetical citations, and at least five reference sources correctly noted on the Works Cited page. In addition, you must attach any online texts you have used in your essay.

 

I.               Strategies for Determining a Viable Problem

Use the following questions to analyze the problem you are considering for investigation:

* What is the problem?

* What is the history of the problem?

* What are the causes of the problem?

* What effects does the problem have? Who is affected?

* How serious is the problem? Why?

 

II.           Strategies for Exploring Possible Solutions

Use the following questions to analyze the problem you are considering for investigation:

* What solutions have already been used to try to alleviate or fix the problem?

* How well have the solutions worked?

* Why haven’t the solutions worked better?

* What solutions are now being considered?

 

Materials

On the assigned date, the following materials must be turned in for full credit:

  1. Completed checklist
  2. Problem solving essay with Works Consulted page
  3. Problem solving essay with Works Cited page
  4. Print-out of all online texts used for the essay

 

Oral Presentation

The final part of this essay assignment is the 20-minute oral presentation. The presentation is worth 40% of your cumulative grade. You will present the following information to a committee on the assigned date. You will be required to present the following:

 

  1. Identification of the problem and goals of your research
  2. Explanation of the history of the problem
  3. Two probable causes of the problem
  4. Two solutions for the problem
  5. Artifacts collected during the research

 

*In addition, you must have a well-thought out visual that relates to and expresses your experience. This should be creative, and appropriate for the assignment.
